What Is CranioSacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a hands-on healing technique, whereby therapists gently mobilise and release the craniosacral system, which includes the soft tissue of the head (cranium), the spine down to its tail end (the sacral area) and the pelvis. It focuses on the cerebrospinal fluid, which is produced and absorbed by the body and in particular, the irregularities in the flow of this fluid.

The movement of spinal fluid within and around the central nervous system is believed to create a vital body rhythm, equally important to health and well-being as the beating of the heart or the breath. This therapy may be of benefit in many areas, including hyperactivity, cerebral palsy, dyslexia and stress related problems.

Craniosacral Therapy helps to boost general well-being, reduce stress, improve quality of sleep, increase energy and enhance the functioning of all the body's organs. It is a non-intrusive therapy that works with the entire structure, physiology, mind and spirit. For a treatment, clients usually lay on a massage table and the therapist works through light clothing. It is a very gentle and profoundly relaxing procedure that lasts between 30 to 60 minutes.

How does it work?

Tensions in the body can occur as a result of physical injuries, stress and emotional issues, which may or may not be recent.
These tensions and holding patterns affect the body’s ability to function as it should. This can give rise to both physical symptoms, such as headaches, back pain and digestive disorders, and emotional problems, including feeling anxious or depressed and sleep disturbances. Sometimes, symptoms can be quite vague; just a sense of 'not feeling quite right'.
Craniosacral Therapy may help to release these patterns and allow your body to soften. When this happens, symptoms often reduce and leave a general sense of improved wellbeing.

Can Craniosacral Therapy help me?

Craniosacral Therapy is extremely gentle, doesn't involve any manipulation, and it's your body which sets the pace of working. Therefore, it may be suitable for all ages, from new-born babies to the elderly, during pregnancy, or after an operation, accident, fall or injury.
You don’t even have to be ill or have any specific symptoms to benefit from Craniosacral Therapy. It may help you to cope with the pace of modern life and all the stresses that go with it!
Complementary Therapies are not a substitute for medical care. If ever your health concerns you at any time, you must always seek advice from your GP.
